  • Major Project Example: You must visually react with outrage, apathy, support or general indifference. Create a visual artwork that responds to your thoughts about this period; you could create a collage, a digital production (Photoshop, Illustrator, Paint, Draw, etc.), a painting, a sculpture or perhaps you wish to record yourself performing an act of performance art with a video camera. Choose a medium that you are comfortable with or wish to explore; perhaps you want to invent your own medium, the choice is yours. Be the self-made genius that you are and explore, be creative, and have fun. Your project can be completely about your time period, simply refer to it or interpret what it means in today's society. The choices you make as an artist are yours and an expression of who you are and what your world is about. Remember, we look back at art because we can't fully know who we are until we know where we come from. Attach your essay along with the photograph(s).
  • Grades will be comprised of discussion board postings, written responses, essays, quizzes, exams, art activities, and project grades. Sketchbook Assignments which are manually executed and digitally documented will accompany most sections and will be offered as a bonus activity to supplement and enhance the online experience and student grade point average.
  • Course takes place entirely online
  • Students will need access to one or more of the following means of capturing images: camera/scanner, digital camera, phone camera, video, etc. Students will encounter a few small tasks that will require basic supplies such as pencil and paper. One final project at the end of each semester will require more labor and possible creative use of materials whether bought or found. Most projects can be done with items found around the house or classroom with little to no expense. A few possible suggestions for optional materials a student may choose to create projects are listed below: -8.5” x 10” unlined Sketchbook or larger -Drawing pencils/pens -Prismacolor or other colored pencils -Access to camera (digital or film) -Poster board, glue, scissors -Matte medium -Oil/chalk pastels -Acrylic paint/brushes/cotton-duck canvas -Prismacolor markers -Lipstick/make-up or anything you can find that makes a mark -Found objects -Creativity

  • No specific software is required for the course, but students will need access to a word processing program and presentation program such as Microsoft Office, Open Office, Microsoft Powerpoint, or Open Presentation. Most of the assignments can be submitted through the course, bypassing such programs but it is recommended for students to save a copy of coursework to their CPUs. Most assignments are open ended and the use of such programs as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Paint, Draw, and other graphical programs are welcome and accepted. Videos are found throughout the course, but most standard computers come equipped with software required for viewing.

  • Art Appreciation online is a 2 semester course that will introduce students to the fundamentals to understanding art of the past, present and allows students to participate and predict what is to come in their future. Participants will deal with the Elements, Principles, and concepts behind constructing effective artworks in the 21st century by referencing prior Western and Non-Western movements. Students will also be required to function within the online school and must demonstrate their knowledge and utilize a variety of computer-related technical skills. This is an introductory survey course that will approach traditional and non-traditional techniques, processes, and concepts behind contemporary art-making. Students will learn the tools necessary to understand, evaluate, and make critical judgments of the value of visual culture and how it affects our everyday world. Students will in addition be required to produce a variety of personal artworks that deal with these affects.
